Gods of Egypt rolls in Sydney
[Fri 21/03/2014 10:36:37]

By Don Groves

Gods of Egypt, Alex Proyas’ fantasy action-adventure starring Gerard Butler, Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Geoffrey Rush and Brenton Thwaites, started shooting on Thursday at the Fox Studios.

The budget is reportedly $150 million, financed by US studio Summit Entertainment with support from the NSW government’s Investment Attraction Scheme.

When he announced the grant, Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner said the production will create an estimated 400 jobs in the local industry and contribute around $75 million in direct production expenditure to the NSW economy.

Stoner said several of the State’s visual effects companies would be used to create the film’s sets, landscapes and creatures.

Entertainment One (formerly Hopscotch eOne) gets the Australian rights via its output deal with Summit. Based on Egyptian mythology, the screenplay is by Proyas, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the team behind Universal’s Dracula Untold, which opens here in October.

Thwaites plays Bek, a young thief who joins the god Horus (Coster-Waldau) on a quest through the palaces and pyramids of ancient Egypt where they encounter the Sun god Ra (Rush) and the dark god Set (Butler), who killed and mutilated his brother Osiris. Horus, the son of Osiris, seeks revenge.

French actress Elodie Yung (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) is cast as the goddess Hathor and Chadwick Boseman is Thoth, the god of wisdom.

The Oz cast includes Courtney Eaton (Mad Max: Fury Road), Goran D. Kleut, Bryan Brown, Rachael Blake, Robyn Nevin, Bruce Spence, Alexander England, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Ya Ya Deng, Emma Booth and Paula Arundell.

Still unresolved is a dispute between the producers and the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance, which objected to an agreement signed by a small number of crew during pre-production.

The MEAA will oppose the agreement when the producers seek to register it with the Fair Work Commission at a hearing due to be held on April 3.

The producers are Proyas’ Mystery Clock Cinema and Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk, with Proyas’ long-time business partner Topher Dow as executive producer.

:rolleye.gif:

Gerard Butler's new £100million movie caught up in bizarre race row
Apr 13, 2014 08:27 By Toby McDonald

PROTESTERS claim African blockbuster Gods Of Egypt has been whitewashed and call for greater racial mix among stars of film.

GERARD Butler has been hit by a bizarre race row on the Aussie set of his new £100million movie.

The blockbuster, called Gods Of Egypt, is set in Africa but the main parts have gone to Butler, Australian Geoffrey Rush and Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.

More than 15,000 signatures have been gathered in Australia, where shooting has begun, for a petition demanding fair representation.

Demonstrators are calling for a greater racial mix among the main characters.

Australian filmmaker Ruby Hamad, one of the protesters, said: “The time-honoured tradition of Hollywood whitewashing continues. Every time people of colour are whitewashed – and it happens with alarming frequency – those of us who dare complain are told not to overreact, that it’s entertainment, that we shouldn’t play the race card.

“After all, why should race matter in a good film? It matters as actors of colour are routinely sidelined.”

Gods Of Egypt is being directed by Alex Proyas, who made Will Smith’s I, Robot. Butler stars as the God of Chaos, Coster-Waldau as Horus and Rush is Sun God Ra.

Egyptians were among people answering a casting call for “extras of Middle-Eastern appearance” but the parts had been filled, it is claimed.

The petition, organised by activists Thorne Studios, has attracted worldwide support.

It demands the director: “Stay true to the appearance of the men you wish to represent.”

Yesterday, film studio Lionsgate and Proyas declined to comment.

:fischio.gif:

OK, scherzo coi fanti e lascio stare i santi!

Boys night out! Gerard Butler sticks close to co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau at Mother Of All Balls after Friday night flirting
By MARIA LEWIS
PUBLISHED: 11:56 GMT, 24 May 2014 | UPDATED: 12:25 GMT, 25 May 2014

Just 24 hours earlier he was seen fliting up a storm at a Sydney cocktail party, but Gerard Butler was on his best behaviour on Saturday night as he made it all about the boys.
The 44-year-old actor stuck close to his Gods Of Egypt co-star and Game Of Thones actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as they attended the Mother Of All Balls at Sydney's Town Hall.
The bromance was in full swing as the two stars walked the red carpet, looking dapper in form-fitting suits: Butler in classic black and white and Coster-Waldau being more experimental in navy.

The pair posed alongside Australian actors and real-life couple Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward, who founded the event over a decade ago to support non-profit organisation YWCA.
Ward lived-up to the theme, wearing an elaborate headpiece and masquearde mask on her head to fit in with the Ballroom which had been decked out in Carnivale decorations.
Butler looked only slighlty uncomfortable in front of the cameras after being sprung flirting with several women at the Belvedere Vodka party at Cruise Bar on Friday night.

The 300 star had tried to avoid photographers by showing up late and avoiding the red carpet, but was pictured chatting closely with model and photographer Ivana Martyn-Zyznikow.
It was only a shot while later that he exchanged contact details with a mystery blonde, before running from the venue for his waiting vehicle nearby.
Butler and Coster-Waldau have been in Sydney since March where they have been filming $150m mythological blockbuster Gods Of Egypt.

Shot at Fox Studios, it's the latest film from prolific Australian director Alex Proyas who is behind i,Robot and The Crow.
The men clearly get along and have been frequently spotted dining together at popular cafes once the cameras have stopped rolling.
Butler too has been a regular addition to the Sydney social scene, appearing at everything from fashion show front rows to label launches in Bondi.

EXCLUSIVE: Move over Russell Crowe, there's a new gladiator in town! Gerard Butler dons Roman skirt and sandals to film scenes for new movie Gods Of Egypt

Russell Crowe's reputation as the most legendary on-screen Gladiator is about to take a beating.
Hollywood hunk Gerard Butler was snapped looking ready for action in Sydney on Tuesday.
The actor, 44, was spotted shooting scenes for the upcoming Gods of Egypt in full costume.

And while few big-screen heroes could pull off a look that includes full skirt and sandals, Gerard seemed more than comfortable as he embraced the role of the villain Set in the $150 million dollar action fantasy flick.
But while his character is the merciless god of darkness, on-set, Gerard seemed to be having a ball.
In fact, usurping the Egyptian throne and plunging the empire into chaos was all in a day's work for the performer, who managed to pretend he was in the midst of chaos while surrounded by crew.

The handsome Olympus Has Fallen actor is reportedly single, but that hasn't stopped him being seen with loads of local ladies, including being spotted with two women at the Belvedere Vodka party at Cruise Bar in Sydney on Friday night.
Earlier this year the star admitted he was still searching for 'the one'.

Spariamoci un'altra dose, va'!

Gerard Butler’s buff physique shows why he’s fit for the leading part in ‘Gods of Egypt’
Christine Sams
THE DAILY TELEGRAPH MAY 27, 2014 5:00PM

HIS film is still being made but let’s face it, Gerard Butler back in armour is likely to be a sure-fire hit.

Butler was in costume on the set of Gods of Egypt in Centennial Park today, as part of filming duties for the new epic.

And the 300 star showed why he has been chosen for one of the leading roles in the Alex Proyas film — he wears a suit of armour with ease.

The 44-year-old Scottish actor, who has become a popular fixture on Sydney’s social circuit while filming in Australia, is playing a villainous ancient god in the film.

Other actors appearing in the $150 million film include Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, from Game of Thrones, and Australian Oscar-winner Geoffrey Rush.

Clearly comfortable throwing his weight around on set, Butler’s scenes were boosted by a number of extras in ancient Egyptian garb.

The actor has spoken previously of his excitement at working on the film in Sydney.

“It’s the largest budget movie I have ever worked on. It’s huge in every dimension. It’s huge in its scope and in its story and visually. (I, Robot’s) Alex Proyas is the man. Everything about the movie feels bang on,” Butler said.
